Dammed to Extinction
June 11 @ 6:00 pm
Tuesday, June 11th at 6:00PM
Presented by Backbone Campaign & Island Greentech
For eons, orca have hunted chinook salmon along the Pacific Coast. For the last 40 years, renowned whale scientist Ken Balcomb has closely observed them. He’s familiar with a deadly pattern: Salmon numbers plummet. Orcas starve. The downward spiral compelled him to realize that studying whales was no longer enough. He needed to act.
The orcas need roughly a million salmon a year. Scientists agree that the best solution is getting rid of four fish-killing dams on the Lower Snake River.
Studying whales is science. Removing dams is politics. Meanwhile, the race to extinction for salmon and orcas speeds up, nipping at the heels of the plodding, clumsy pace of political change in the Pacific Northwest, where dams and hydropower are king.
Dammed to Extinction screens Tuesday, June 11th as part of the Backbone Meaningful Movies film series. Director Michael Peterson will be at the screening and will lead an audience Q & A.
Admission is free; donations accepted at the door. Thank you to Island Green Tech and Vashon Theatre for generous support and to Save Our Wild Salmon for collaboration.
